FRESNO, Calif.--Fresno is reflecting on the life and legacy of Jim Aldredge, whose passing on October 17, 2025, marked the end of an era for the city he so dearly loved.
Surrounded by family at his home, Aldredge left this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice and education.
From Humble Beginnings to Historic Achievement
Aldredge was a Fresno resident from the age of four, and his story is one of quiet strength and dedication. His career in public service began with roles such as assistant city manager, eventually leading to his historic appointment as Fresno’s first Black city manager. Aldredge’s tenure was characterized by his deep love for the community and his determination to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around him.
“He was so proud of this city, and we were so incredibly proud of him,” family members shared, underscoring the mutual respect and affection between Aldredge and the city he served.
Champion for Justice and Education
After leaving Fresno City Hall in 1989, Aldredge transitioned into academia, joining Fresno State as a professor. Over more than a decade, he influenced the next generation of leaders, bringing his serious academic approach and high standards to the classroom. Colleagues and students alike recognized that Aldredge’s rigorous expectations were a reflection of deep respect and a desire to help others achieve their best.
His achievements were many, but Aldredge was especially proud of receiving the B'Nai B'rith Award, a testament to his lifelong dedication to justice and equity in the community.
Remembered by Loved Ones
To his family, Jim Aldredge was more than a public figure. He was a man of quiet devotion whose dry wit and steadfast love left lasting impressions. Stories of his brief time with the Pittsburgh Pirates—an athletic dream cut short by injury—gave insight into the resilience and determination that would later define his career and character.
Aldredge is preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Rae, and his brother, John Aldredge. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, both within and beyond his family circle.
Honoring a Lasting Legacy
A service to celebrate Jim Aldredge’s life was held on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the Westside Church of God where thousands of people celebrated his life in person and online.
The family asks that donations may continue to the James E. Aldridge Foundation, reflecting Aldredge’s commitment to building a lasting legacy through education and principled action. Those wishing to honor his memory may also plant trees via the Sympathy Store.
As Fresno mourns the loss of a trailblazer, the city also celebrates the enduring impact of Jim Aldredge—a man whose life serves as a beacon of courage, integrity, and hope for future generations.
