Community event includes music, bounce house and free food for the children
FRESNO, CA - As the 11-day voting spree begins this Saturday with the implementation of the Voter's Choice Act passed in 2016, this new election model allows voters to choose how, when, and where to cast their ballot over a several-day period.
Although the primary elections will be held March 3, residents can vote 10 days prior to that date.
Here are some of those upcoming voter dates:
February 18, 2020 to March 3, 2020: Conditional Voter Registration period
February 22, 2020: Eleven-day Vote Centers open
February 25, 2020: Last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot
February 29, 2020: All Vote Centers open March 3, 2020: Election Day (7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
March 6, 2020: Last day to receive vote-by-mail ballot postmarked no later than March 3, 2020
Also imperative for Fresno Black community to know more about is the upcoming 2020 Census to begin April 1. As the undercount of African-Americans in the Central Valley is one of the highest hard-to-count populations in California, Fresno alone has eight census tracts that are a major priority, according to recent census data.
Out of the 42,000 African-Americans in the combined Fresno County areas, the hard-to-count percentile is 80% higher than the state's 28% average. In terms of large populations of African-Americans in California, the city of Fresno ranks in the top ten as the 8th highest.
The Community Fun Fest event, Saturday, Feb. 22 from 11a to 5p sponsored by the African-American Museum, the San Joaquin Valley Health Fund, and a host of community donors and supporters will stress the importance of the local Black community being involved in the new voting process, and the importance of being a part of the upcoming 2020 Census April 1. It will also feature local comedic talent, Feather Da-Wyz along with community leader and activist, T. Myers, who will also stress the importance of both civic duties.
