FRESNO, CA - As the holiday season has just begun, The African American Historical and Cultural Museum of the San Joaquin Valley (AAHCMSJV) is kicking off its winter holiday celebration with its Holiday Xmas Tree Exhibit during this week's December arthop.
The community is invited to join in the free Arthop fun and participate in the Xmas Tree "Community Choice" Award, Thursday, Dec. 6 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the AAHCMSJV located at 1857 Fulton St. Fresno, CA 93721 . Members of the community get to choose their favorite tree; winners are featured in the upcoming 2019 Black History Month Banquet program booklet, an event that celebrates local trailblazers from throughout the Central Valley. (Refreshments available as well some refreshments for purchase.)
African-American organizations from throughout the Central Valley have put in serious time and energy to create designer trees representing their organization. The designer Xmas trees will also be featured on The ONME Network along with the final winners.
The day after Christmas, the Central Valley is invited to experience Kwanzaa from a community perspective; Kwanzaa, meaning "first fruits," is a reflective annual exercise that uses principles to analyze work that has been done or needs to be done within the community. For seven days, a principle is described, practiced and evaluated from a holistic view: December 26, Umoja ~ Unity; December 27, Kujichagulia ~ Self- Determination; December 28, ~ Ujima ~ Collective Work and Responsibility; December 29, Ujamaa ~ Cooperative Economics; December 30 Nia ~ Purpose; December 31 Kuumba ~ Creativity; January 1, Imani ~ Faith.
Kwanzaa, a reflective practice celebrating African-American culture & heritage, created by Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, was first celebrated on December 26, 1966. It was created to reaffirm the communitarian vision and values of African culture and to contribute to its restoration among African peoples in the Diaspora, beginning with Africans in America.
The AAHCMSJV Museum will be commencing Kwanzaa starting Dec. 26 at 6:00 PM in the evenings.
