Gaston Middle School Black History Month assembly

The Gaston Middle School Black Student Union (BSU) is hosting the 3rd Annual Black History assembly to jump start the activities for Black History Month. Student representatives from BSU have collaborated with the choir, drama, band, the art club, students from the afterschool program, leadership students, speech & debate students, the Voices Unidas club and King Elementary School to plan the cultural events for the month of February. The event will give Gaston Middle School students the opportunity to enjoy a culturally fun filled assembly which will include a performance of the Black National Anthem at the start of the event, a reenactment of the Woolworths Lunch Counter Sit In (Separate is not Equal), Ruby Bridges Scene, music (tribute to Motown), dancing, and historical culture education.

One of the goals of the BSU is to organize and provide culturally enriched activities and experiences on campus for the entire student body by educating them about African American Heritage. Black History Month is a special time to educate students about the way African-Americans have helped shaped our country’s history and culture.

This event presents an opportunity for local media and press to capture a memorable and spectacular event as Gaston Middle School celebrates Black History Month.
