FRESNO, CA - Fresno Housing is hosting a virtual groundbreaking ceremony for The Monarch @ Chinatown, a Transformative Climate Communities project (TCC.) on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at 2 p.m.; viewers can watch it live via Facebook (Live Event) or live on CMAC TV (Live Stream.)
The press conference will include comments from Fresno Housing CEO, Preston Prince, City of Fresno Mayor Lee Brand, City of Fresno District 3 Council President Miguel Arias,
Chinatown Foundation's Morgan Doizaki, TCC Strategic Growth Council Executive Director Louise Bedsworth and California Housing Finance Agency Executive Director Tia Boatman Patterson.
The community-based TCC project involved a hands-on process to identify how to spend $66.5 million of the state cap-and-trade dollars set aside for the City of Fresno. Fresno community leaders and elected officials worked with local environmental justice and residents to determine how the funds would be spent.
With transparency in mind, program leaders organized an open steering committee for Fresno residents who live, work or owns a business or property in the neighborhoods eligible for TCC funding - southwest, Chinatown, and downtown Fresno. More than 60 projects were put forward, with voting reserved for residents involved in the process from the beginning.
The TCC funded project, "The Monarch @ Chinatown," is a four-story development that will eliminate a blighted vacant lot, provide environmentally friendly amenities, offer one, two- and three-bedroom units for a total of 57 units, and will also include public art and other amenities to meet the needs of the current community.
The development was also designed to connect residents to the future high-speed rail station; it is also the first zero-net energy affordable housing development in the area, a key component of Fresno Housing’s mission, which is to create and sustain vibrant communities throughout the city and county of Fresno by creating high-quality affordable housing.
The agency also administers the Housing Choice Voucher program to ensure residents have access to a safe and stable place to live and partners with other organizations and agencies to provide supportive housing and resources to help reduce homelessness in our region.
